Drama Editorial Review

"Pretty Baby" is a harrowing portrayal of Prostitution and child exploitation in New Orleans' red-light district in 1917. The film portrays the life of Violet, a twelve-year-old Prostitute, and her mother, who is also a Prostitute, as well as a professional photographer who develops an interest in Violet. Brook Shields' portrayal of Violet is raw, emotional and her performance is commendable. Although the subject matter is difficult, Louis Malle's direction manages to present a committed and grim tale without exploiting the characters, however, it is essential to note that the film isn't for everyone. The movie successfully presents a truth inspired by real scenarios and is a poignant reminder that although times may have changed from 1917, it does not mean all disorders have vanished. Overall, the film is a thought stimulus with characters, that despite their profession, show moments of grace and dignity rather than exploiting them for twisted desires.
