Action & Adventure Editorial Review

'At Close Range' is a 1986 crime drama film based on a true account of father and son criminals who specialised in farm equipment theft in rural Pennsylvania. The father, played by Christopher Walken, turns out to be a sociopath willing to go to brutal lengths to ensure his freedom and safety. His son, played by Sean Penn, becomes caught up in his father's criminal world, which ultimately leads to tragedy. The film is well-acted, with standout performances from Walken and Penn. The ending is particularly powerful, with just three little words packing an emotional punch. The soundtrack is also noteworthy. Some reviewers found the film disturbing, particularly the portrayal of statutory rape and rape of a minor, and did not believe it held up in 2023, with some suggesting it should no longer be viewed. Others appreciated the authenticity of the characters and storyline, describing it as a great story with very real characters. Overall, 'At Close Range' is an underrated classic with strong performances, a powerful ending, and a memorable soundtrack.
