What is magicJack Plus?

magicJack Plus is a voice-over-IP (VoIP) device that allows users to make unlimited calling to the U.S. and Norway through an internet connection. Its user-friendly plug-and-play setup facilitates seamless connection to a standard landline phone. This device works by converting your voice into digital signals transmitted over the internet, making it an economical choice for individuals looking to stay connected without traditional phone service fees.

How does magicJack Plus work?

magicJack Plus operates by connecting to your internet router via an Ethernet cable and a standard telephone to enable voice calls. Once set up, the device uses VoIP technology to transmit audio signals over the internet, which means calls can be made without interrupting regular internet usage. This is particularly beneficial in areas with reliable internet service, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional landline and mobile services.

Do I need a computer to use magicJack Plus?

No, magicJack Plus does not require a computer to operate. This device is designed for standalone use; you simply connect it to your router and telephone. This feature makes it highly convenient and portable, allowing users to make calls from anywhere with a reliable internet connection, such as home or a vacation rental, without the need for an additional device.

Is magicJack Plus compatible with all phones?

magicJack Plus is compatible with any standard analog telephone. This allows users to connect their existing phone directly to the device, which means there are no special requirements or proprietary hardware needed. Whether you prefer using a cordless phone, a landline, or a traditional desk phone, magicJack Plus serves as an integration point that enhances versatility.

What features does magicJack Plus offer?

magicJack Plus includes various features such as voicemail, call forwarding, call waiting, and three-way calling. These functionalities make it comparable to traditional phone services, enhancing affordability without sacrificing quality. For instance, voicemail allows users to receive calls even when they cannot answer, making it a practical choice for both personal and professional communication.

Is there an emergency calling service with magicJack Plus?

magicJack Plus does not offer traditional emergency calling services like 911. Users are encouraged to maintain a secondary method of communication for emergency situations. While the device is excellent for everyday calls and provides numerous features, relying totally on it for emergencies may not be prudent.

Can I use magicJack Plus internationally?

Yes, magicJack Plus allows for international calls, but rates will vary depending on the destination country. This feature is particularly advantageous for individuals with family or business connections abroad. Users can utilize the service to stay connected globally while managing call costs—a compelling option for frequent travelers or expatriates.

What internet speed is recommended for magicJack Plus?

For optimal performance, a broadband internet connection with a minimum speed of 1 Mbps is recommended for using magicJack Plus. Sufficient bandwidth ensures that calls are clear and uninterrupted, which is crucial for maintaining conversation quality. Users in households with multiple devices should consider higher speeds to accommodate simultaneous internet usage.

Can magicJack Plus be used for video calls?

No, magicJack Plus is designed primarily for voice calls and does not support video calling functionality. While it excels in delivering clear audio, users seeking video conferencing should explore dedicated applications or devices geared towards video communication. However, for users focused solely on voice interactions, magicJack Plus remains an excellent solution.

magicJack Adapters Editorial Review

The Magic Jack Plus is a VOIP device that requires a high-speed internet connection to work. The call quality and connection speed are generally good but depend on the type of phone used. The device comes with an assigned number, but customers can also "port" their existing phone numbers to it. The price includes the first year of service, and customers have the option to extend the service for a second year. There were mixed reviews of the product, with some customers complaining that it was misrepresented, overpriced, had scratchy sound quality, and didn't work with their answering machine or offer international calls to India. However, others found it easy to set up and had no issues with the device's functionality, stating that it was a cost-effective solution for a home phone.
